Ukraine May Have To Recognise Territorial Losses Under Peace Deal, Says Macron

In a potential peace agreement with Russia, French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that Ukraine may eventually have to acknowledge the loss of some of its territory.

In a video statement posted on the Elysee Palace's X page, Macron stated that the nation may acknowledge the loss of territory as part of a truce, ceasefire, or peace treaty.

Despite their military defeat, it will acknowledge their loss rather than their subjugation under any other nation. According to the Russian news agency Tass, he said that it won't violate international law but will be a significant concession.

After three and a half years of war and countless victims, Macron highlighted that no nation will accept even real territorial losses if it is not assured that the remainder of its territory will be safe.

According to him, the Coalition of the Willing convened on Sunday to debate security assurances for Kyiv, which will be discussed again on Monday at a meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington. According to Tass, the alliance seeks to describe the structure of the Ukrainian army that will enable a fair and lasting peace.

According to Tass, the French commander also mentioned that a number of Western nations have said they are prepared to deploy thousands of soldiers to Ukraine in order to maintain peace after the conflict.

Macron mentioned that several states are prepared to do this, including providing logistics and training as well as being present in noncombat zones—that is, not on the front lines or in contested areas. He added that he would discuss the possibility of sending military contingents with Trump to determine how the United States is prepared to contribute in this regard.

On August 18, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will visit Washington. The Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni, the British prime minister Keir Starmer, the French president Emmanuel Macron, and the German chancellor Friedrich Merz will be with him. Additionally, Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, has stated that she will be attending this gathering.
