TRA Issues Bylaw On Regulating International Telecommunications Cables

Muscat: The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has announced Decision No. 1111, which introduces a “Bylaw on Regulating International Telecommunications Cables. ”

This decision aims to create a reliable and accessible telecommunications framework within the Sultanate of Oman while fostering a dynamic regulatory environment that adapts to the fast-paced changes in the telecom industry. Additionally, this initiative will help fulfill Oman’s aspiration to cultivate a competitive and investment-attractive landscape.

The new bylaw establishes a regulatory framework for marine communications cables situated in economic zones and navigable straits, specifically without the requirement of anchorage. It encompasses all operations associated with the extension of international communications cables, including surveying, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair within Oman's territory, its waters, Special Economic Zones, and straits. Furthermore, the bylaw emphasizes the consolidation of approval processes to facilitate seamless and standardized procedures.

This decision applies to licensees and all enterprises engaged in the laying of international telecommunications cables. Its goal is to draw in investments and create essential tools to govern the activities related to the installation of these cables. Additionally, it aims to boost competition by enhancing service quality, expanding options, and achieving competitive pricing. Ultimately, this will lead to improved collaboration among various government agencies and relevant stakeholders.
