Salalah: A two-day workshop on "Risk and Disaster Reduction" began on Wednesday at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Compound for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah.
The workshop is organised by the Environment Authority in partnership with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Regional Office for Arab States.
Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, presided over the opening ceremony, which was attended by several specialists and experts from Oman and other countries.
The workshop seeks to help national professionals comprehend the global framework for reducing natural catastrophe risks, as well as established procedures for monitoring and reporting progress toward the global framework's goals.
It includes presentations, interactive debates, and hands-on training on utilizing the global reporting system, as well as an emphasis on the role of institutional governance in this area.
Mamdouh Salim Al Marhoon, Director of the Environmental Emergency Center, told the workshop that "the Sultanate of Oman is conscious of the growing difficulties connected with climate change and its geographic nature. " This need the establishment of an integrated national risk management system based on information, proactive planning, and collaboration across various stakeholders. ”
Al Marhoon emphasized Oman's commitment to fulfilling the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.
He stated that this goal is accomplished by making decisions based on reliable information and developing long-term capabilities that improve preparedness while minimizing the effect of catastrophes on individuals and the environment.
Noura Al Ashqar, Director of the UNDRR's Regional Office for Arab States, remarked, "The Sultanate of Oman is making measurable progress toward increased resilience by incorporating the concept of risk reduction into national laws and plans, in addition to utilizing data and information in a way that enables decision-making in the face of growing environmental issues confronting the region. "
The workshop's opening session featured a graphic presentation on the Sendai Framework, as well as a description of the workshop's agenda by Mirna Abu Ata, UNDRR Programme Management Officer.
The workshop also covers the definition of the Sendai Framework, its objectives, indicators, terminology, and the relationship between the Sendai Framework and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It also addresses the worldwide reporting system, data categorization processes, and periodic reporting.
The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, as the leading global benchmark in this sector, aims to reduce human, material, and service losses, improve risk knowledge and management, and promote capacity development, disaster preparedness, and response to calamities when they strike.
The Sendai Framework includes seven global goals and 38 indicators to track progress. Member states are committed to provide regular reports via an established digital platform.
