Indian Envoy Meets Yemen Leaders, Discusses Bilateral Ties

Sanaa: The Indian Ambassador to Yemen, Suhel Ajaz Khan, met with Rashad AlAlimi, Chairman of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, in Riyadh in order to discuss bilateral relations and other issues of mutual interest.

Amb. Dr. Suhel Khan, together with DCM Shri Abu Mathen and First Secretary Shri Rishi Tripathi, met with H.E. Dr. Rashad AlAlimi, Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council of Yemen, today in Riyadh, according to the Indian Embassy in Yemen's post on X.

They discussed India-Yemen ties and other issues of shared concern, according to the statement.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India was one of the first countries to have actively supported Yemen's independence from the British and one of the earliest to recognize the Yemen Arab Republic (YAR) in 1962 and the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY) in 1967. In 1990, YAR and PDRY merged to form the Republic of Yemen.

According to the Department of Commerce, Government of India, India's total bilateral trade with Yemen for FY 2021-22 was USD 1. 07 billion. According to the MEA, total exports to Yemen in FY 2021-22 amounted USD 847 million (YoY rise 7.77%), while total imports totaled USD 228 million (YoY increase 873.92%).

India exports to Yemen rice, wheat, sugar, drug formulations, ceramics and related goods, processed fruits and juices, textile supplies, petroleum products, yarn, and textiles. In exchange, Yemen supplies India with iron and steel, petroleum, telecom devices, aluminum and aluminum items, lead and related products, electric machinery and equipment, copper and copper goods, and raw hides and skins.

According to the MEA, India is one of the largest suppliers of pharmaceuticals to Yemen, with Ranbaxy, Cipla, Sun Pharma, Alkem Laboratory Limited, Cadilla, Wockhardt, Glenmarc, Kopran Laboratories Ltd. , Orchid, Medley, and Biocon, among others, active in Yemen's market.
