Washington, DC: The National Press Club stated on Monday that it was grieved and concerned by reports from Al Jazeera that one of its correspondents, Anas alSharif, was killed in Gaza on Monday.
According to the National Press Club, the network stated that alSharif, 28, died when a tent housing reporters outside the main entrance of Gaza City's alShifa Hospital was struck.
Al Sharif, a well-known Arabic-language journalist, has extensively covered the ongoing conflict in northern Gaza. According to the report, his death is one of more than 200 journalists murdered since the conflict began.
The killing of a journalist while trying to report the public is a tragedy that extends well beyond one newsroom, according to National Press Club President Mike Balsamo. Journalists should be able to work without being targeted or killed. All sides engaged in conflict zones must respect their duties under international law to safeguard journalists and guarantee that they may perform their work safely.
The National Press Club has demanded a full and open probe into the events surrounding al-Sharif's murder and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the safety and independence of reporters throughout the world.
This occurs after Israeli forces murdered five Al Jazeera personnel, including correspondent Anas al-Sharif, in a targeted attack on their media tent near Gaza City's al-Shifa Hospital, according to Al Jazeera.
According to the network, Israel's military claimed responsibility for the murder in a statement, alleging that alSharif commanded a team of Hamas' armed wing, which Al Jazeera dismissed as erroneous.
STRUCK: Hamas terrorist Anas Al-Sharif, who masqueraded as an Al Jazeera reporter, was the leader of a Hamas terrorist group that promoted rocket assaults on Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers. According to intelligence and documents gathered in Gaza, including lists, terrorist training schedules, and compensation data, he was a Hamas operative embedded inside Al Jazeera. A press credential is not a safeguard against terrorism, according to the IDF's post on X.

Al Jazeera said that the assault also murdered correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh, cameramen Ibrahim Zaher and Moamen Aliwa, and their assistant, Mohammed Noufal.
According to Gaza health officials, Israel's assault on Gaza has killed at least 61,430 people and injured 153,213 more. According to estimates, 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023 attacks, and over 200 were taken hostage.
