Construction Work Continues On Al-Zahimi Dam In North Al Batinah

Liwa: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources is still working on the AlZahimi flood protection dam project in the Liwa region of the North Al Batinah Governorate.

The project, which began on April 24, 2025, is scheduled to be completed by February 24, 2027, at a construction cost of more than RO 9 million. The project's completion rate was 19% at the end of July.

Eng. Nasser Mohammed Al Battashi, Director General of Water Resources Assessment at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, told the Oman News Agency (ONA) that the AlZahimi flood protection dam is designed to protect flood-prone areas downstream in the Wilayats of Liwa and Shinas. These areas are frequently impacted by seasonal cyclones and subsequent floods, resulting in significant loss of life and property.

He stated that the project will boost groundwater recharge in the region, hence promoting water resource sustainability and increasing water efficiency across a variety of industries, including agriculture.

Al Battashi also mentioned that once finished, the dam would provide groundwater to various communities and is projected to enhance living standards in these locations by reducing flood effects, ensuring sustainable groundwater use, and increasing agricultural production.

He stated that the initiative will reduce flood risks in downstream residential and agricultural districts, boost groundwater recharge rates, and give a supplemental water supply during dry periods, in addition to improving agricultural output through stabilized water supplies.

The Director General stressed that the AlZahimi flood protection dam is one of the strategic solutions to cope with rising climate issues, demonstrating the commitment of relevant authorities to balancing environmental protection and sustainable development, with progress on schedule.
