Role Of Cultural Diversity In Strengthening National Identity

Muscat: A dialogue session titled "Cultural Diversity and Identity" was organized by the Cultural Committee of the Muscat International Book Fair as part of the event's programming.

This session focused on the cultural legacy of Oman and its importance in strengthening national identity and cultivating a sense of belonging.

The conversation was guided by Dr. Nader Kazem, a writer and previous professor of cultural studies at the University of Bahrain. He discussed the vital role of cultural diversity as a key factor in the formation of a cohesive national identity and proposed ways to maintain it in light of swift regional and global changes.

Dr. Kazem pointed out that a society characterized by multiculturalism and the presence of various identities necessitates a profound level of tolerance, acceptance, and respect among its members. This notion has endured through time and is increasingly pertinent within the framework of contemporary nations.

He argued that globalization, which began decades earlier, has enhanced the connections between societies, impacting local cultural uniqueness and leading to the emergence of uniform global cultural trends in domains like architecture, cuisine, and fashion.

The session highlighted Oman’s exemplary approach to cultural pluralism and harmonious coexistence, presenting concrete examples from its artistic, cultural, and literary heritage that serve as significant elements of national identity.

An open forum followed, where scholars, intellectuals, and cultural representatives discussed the crucial role that cultural diversity plays in fostering a unified national identity and explored ways to sustain it amidst evolving regional and global landscapes.

The session wrapped up with suggestions emphasizing the need for ongoing efforts to safeguard cultural heritage and advance initiatives that showcase Oman’s genuine identity on the international front.
