Kabul: Afghanistan is still recovering from a series of earthquakes, with another tremor measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale hitting the country in the early hours of Friday, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The NCS shared the information on X, stating, "EQ of M: 4.9, On: 05/09/2025 03:16:43 IST, Lat: 34.57 N, Long: 70.42 E, Depth: 120 Km, Location: Afghanistan."
This latest quake follows two earlier earthquakes of magnitudes 5.8 and 4.1 that affected the area late Thursday, as reported by the NCS.
The NCS noted that the first earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.8, struck at 10:26 PM on Thursday, while the second earthquake, measuring 4.1, occurred at 11:58 PM the same night.
"EQ of M: 5.8, On: 04/09/2025 22:26:29 IST, Lat: 34.58 N, Long: 70.66 E, Depth: 160 Km, Location: Afghanistan," the NCS posted on X.
"EQ of M: 4.1, On: 04/09/2025 23:58:28 IST, Lat: 34.60 N, Long: 70.50 E, Depth: 50 Km, Location: Afghanistan," it added.
In response to the disaster, the World Food Programme (WFP) has dispatched emergency aid to the quake-affected provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar, where over 1,400 individuals have lost their lives and more than 3,000 have sustained injuries, as reported by Khaama Press.
The initial aid shipments consist of food supplies and high-energy biscuits, with more flights planned to provide additional support and personnel.
Khaama Press, referencing the WFP in its report, highlighted that numerous communities impacted by the earthquake were already facing challenges following recent flash floods, and deteriorating weather conditions now pose a risk of worsening the humanitarian crisis.
In describing the destruction, WFP's regional director Harald Mannhardt remarked, "Homes turned to rubble, roads obliterated, landslides everywhere, and tragically, lives lost."
He mentioned that teams are collaborating with rescue efforts and are ready to scale up operations as the needs increase. Rescue missions continue to be obstructed by blocked roads, difficult terrain, and ongoing aftershocks.
Earlier on Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in a post on X, announced that Indian earthquake aid has arrived in Kabul via air.
"Indian earthquake assistance has reached Kabul by air. 21 tonnes of relief supplies, including blankets, tents, hygiene kits, water storage tanks, generators, kitchen utensils, portable water purifiers, sleeping bags, essential medicines, wheelchairs, hand sanitizers, water purification tablets, ORS solutions, and medical consumables, were airlifted today," he stated.
