Putin Has 10-12 Day Deadline To Reach Ukraine Deal — Trump

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he would set a new deadline of 10 to 12 days for Russian President Vladimir Putin to put an end to the conflict in Ukraine.

I am disappointed in President Putin, Trump remarked to journalists during a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at his opulent golf course in Turnberry, Scotland.

I'm going to set a new deadline of approximately 10 to 12 days from today. There's no purpose in waiting; we just don't see any progress being made, he said.

When and why did Trump give Putin a deadline?

Before returning to the White House in January, Trump promised to end the dispute within 24 hours, but he did not explain how.

Trump gave Putin a 50-day deadline earlier this month, after expressing displeasure with his Moscow counterpart for continuing to attack Ukraine.

The US president has warned additional penalties for Russia and consumers of its exports if a peace agreement is not achieved.

Trump has expressed displeasure with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. None more so than the two's heated meeting at the White House in February, during which the US President received plaudits from Russian authorities for confronting his Ukrainian equivalent in front of the media and later declaring that Zelenskyy was unprepared for peace.

Has Trump consistently supported his remarks?

Once more on Monday, Trump boasted about his harsh stance on the Russian president, but he has not always kept his promises to Putin.

We believed we had that settled many times, and then President Putin goes out and starts launching rockets into some city, like Kyiv, and kills a lot of people in a nursing home or whatever, Trump said. And I believe that is not the way to go about it.

Ukraine applauded Trump on Monday for announcing that he would shorten the 50-day deadline.

What was Ukraine's response?

Zelenskyy tweeted on X that his clear stance and expressed resolve came at the perfect time, when true peace might be achieved through strength. I commend President Trump's emphasis on saving lives and stopping this terrible conflict. Ukraine remains committed to peace and will continue to work tirelessly with the United States to make both of our countries safer, stronger, and more prosperous.

Ukrainian Presidential Assistant Andriy Yermak thanked President Trump for maintaining firm and delivering a clear message of peace via strength, stating that when America leads with strength, others reconsider.

Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, marking an increase of a conflict that began with Moscow's capture of Crimea in 2014.

Last week, the Ukrainian and Russian delegations ended talks in Istanbul by agreeing to conduct another prisoner swap, but no progress toward peace was made.
