Nepal: Death Toll From Gen Z Protests Rises To 31, Talks On To Establish Interim Govt

Kathmandu: The ongoing Gen Z protests in the Kathmandu Valley have resulted in a death toll of 31, as reported by The Kathmandu Post, referencing officials from the Department of Forensic Medicine at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, where the deceased are undergoing postmortem examinations.

According to The Kathmandu Post on Wednesday, the identities of 25 victims have been tentatively confirmed so far.

The remaining six individuals, consisting of five men and one woman, have yet to be identified.

"We have conducted a postmortem in accordance with international protocols... We are instructed to preserve the bodies; we cannot disclose details about the deceased," stated Dr. Gopal Kumar Chaudhary, Head of the Department, as quoted by The Kathmandu Post.

Authorities indicated that most identifications were made through documents found at the protest sites or by family members recognizing the bodies.

Additionally, over 1000 individuals sustained injuries during the protests throughout the region.

In related news, the wife of former Nepalese Prime Minister Khanal is currently in critical condition following an arson attack that occurred amid the violent demonstrations across the nation, as reported by The Kathmandu Post.

Despite earlier claims that she had died in the arson attack, Ravi Laxmi Chitrakar, the spouse of former PM and senior CPN (Unified Socialist) leader Jhala Nath Khanal, is in critical condition due to severe burns.

According to The Kathmandu Post, Chitrakar was admitted to Kirtipur Hospital on Tuesday after the incident, which transpired when protesters set fire to her home in the Dallu area of Kathmandu while she was still inside.

Discussions are currently taking place among the Nepalese Army, President Ram Chandra Paudel of Nepal, and representatives from the Gen Z youth to establish the leadership of a temporary government in light of the ongoing political turmoil, as reported by The Himalayan Post.

As per The Himalayan Post's sources, the leaders of the Gen Z protests have unanimously selected former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as their candidate for the interim Prime Minister role.

Negotiations will commence between Karki's representatives and the Army's leadership, which includes Chief of Army Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel, and may extend to the President's Office at Sheetal Niwas, depending on the developments of the situation.

Balendra Shah 'Balen', the Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, has also expressed his support for Karki, bolstering her position as the chosen candidate of the Gen Z movement.

The protests initiated on September 8, 2025, in Kathmandu and other significant cities such as Pokhara, Butwal, and Birgunj, following the government's decision to ban major social media platforms due to concerns regarding tax revenue and cybersecurity.

A curfew has been enforced in several cities, including Kathmandu, to manage the situation, which is set to remain in effect until Friday morning, according to a statement from the Nepalese Army.

Demonstrators are calling for an end to "institutionalised corruption and favouritism" within governance.

They are demanding greater accountability and transparency from the government in its decision-making processes.

Public discontent has intensified further as the "Nepo Babies" trend on social media has revealed the extravagant lifestyles of politicians' children, underscoring the economic divide between them and the average citizen.
