India Elected To UN's Economic And Social Council For Term 2026-28

New Delhi: On Wednesday, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that India has been elected to the United Nations' Economic and Social Council for the period 2026-28. He reiterated India's commitment to promoting development concerns and continuing to work to strengthen the ECOSOC.

He thanked UN member states for their assistance and confidence in India. He also praised the efforts made by India's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

Jaishankar remarked in a message on X that India had been chosen to the Economic and Social Council for the years 202628 at the UN today. Thank you to the member states for your great support and faith in us. Appreciate @IndiaUNNewYork's attempts. India is still dedicated to advocating development challenges and will continue to strive to reinforce the ECOSOC.

The ECOSOC is at the core of the United Nations system for advancing the three aspects of sustainable development: economic, social, and environmental. It serves as the main forum for encouraging discussion, innovative thinking, creating agreement on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve globally agreed-upon objectives.

It is also in charge of the follow-up to key UN conferences and summits, according to the UN statement. The UN Charter created ECOSO as one of the organization's six primary organs in 1945.

Earlier in April, India's Permanent Mission to the United Nations celebrated Dr. BR Ambedkar's 135th birthday with a special memorial event at UN headquarters in New York, attended by global dignitaries.

During the event, India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, praised Dr. Ambedkar's contributions as a major participant in India's independence movement and the architect of the country's Constitution.

The event was themed around the everlasting appeal of Dr. Ambedkar's vision inside the UN and beyond, emphasizing his impact on both India and the worldwide community.

Harish stated that he was delighted to welcome everyone to the celebratory event commemorating Dr. BR Ambedkar's 135th birth anniversary. Dr. Ambedkar was a prominent figure in India's independence movement and the creator of India's constitution. The person who dedicated his life to establishing the groundwork for our current republic. Today's theme, "The enduring appeal of Dr. Ambedkar's vision inside the UN and beyond," is especially appropriate as we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the UN's establishment this year.
