The NYPD officer murdered in the gunfire was identified as Didarul Islam, a three-and-a-half-year veteran of the department who was born in Bangladesh, according to Adams.

He died the same way he lived. Jessica Tisch, the police commissioner, described him as a hero during a press conference. He was married with two little boys, and his wife was pregnant with their third kid, according to her.

Suspect was armed with an M4 rifle as he entered the building foyer and fired shots 'immediately. '

Tisch detailed how surveillance video revealed a guy getting out of a double-parked BMW and carrying an M4 assault rifle as he approached the structure.

He immediately opened fire on the police officer who was killed, then shot a woman attempting to seek refuge.

According to Tisch, the suspect then began firing shots into the lobby before fleeing to the elevator bank, where he shot a security guard who was seated behind a security desk. He also shot another guy in the lobby, according to the police commissioner.

She further said that detectives discovered a rifle case, a revolver, magazines, and ammunition inside the suspect's vehicle.

According to the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), emergency crews responded to reports of shots fired about 6:30 p. m. local time (10:30 p. m. GMT), during rush hour in a populated section of the city.

According to NYPD Commissioner, the gunman had mental health concerns.

According to cops, the shooter was identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, and Tisch told journalists at the news conference that the suspect had a recorded mental health history. However, the motivation was unknown.

We are attempting to figure out why he selected this specific site, Tisch stated, referring to the tower that the shooter assaulted. The neighborhood where the incident occurred is frequented by visitors and business travelers.
