New Delhi: On Thursday, the Ministry of External Affairs denounced the desecration of one of Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral homes in Bangladesh.
During a media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the violent act is a disgrace to the Nobel laureate's memory, inclusive philosophy, and teachings.
When questioned about reports from Bangladesh concerning the vandalism of Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home, the MEA Spokesperson responded, "We firmly disapprove of the despicable assault and vandalism of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home by a mob on June 8, 2025. " Rabindra Kutcherybari, historically known as Kutcherybari, is a home in Sirajganj, Bangladesh. The violent act is a disgrace to the memory, inclusive philosophy, and teachings that the Nobel laureate advocated in Bangladesh.
He went on to say that "the attack fits the broad pattern of the extremists' ongoing attempts to erase symbols of tolerance, eviscerate syncretic culture, and destroy Bangladesh's cultural heritage. "
Calling the culprits of the deed terrorists, the MEA urged the interim government to take serious action against them.
We encourage the interim administration to rein in the criminals and take decisive action against the perpetrators in order to prevent the repetition of such incidents, which have regrettably become a recurrent characteristic, according to the spokesman.
Earlier on Thursday, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami denounced the incident of a violent mob attacking Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh, claiming that the assault was more than vandalism and a premeditated hate crime against Bharat's civilizational spirit and cultural heritage.
Shocking and unacceptable. A vicious mob in Bangladesh has vandalized Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home, the famous Kutchery House in Shahjadpur, shattering windows, damaging property, and shouting hateful slogans, all while Mohammad Yunus' administration looks on. “This is far beyond mere vandalism; it is a premeditated hate crime directed against Bharat’s civilizational spirit and cultural heritage,” the statement reads.
Dhami went on to say that these assaults were intended to marginalise Hindu Bengalis in Bangladesh, thus eroding their identity, history, and legacy. He went on to say that the event required attention, condemnation, and action.
Tagore is a global figure, yet he remains a beloved emblem of India's spirit. What we are witnessing is the continued marginalization of Hindu Bengalis in Bangladesh, as their identity, history, and legacy are all systematically destroyed. The international community cannot afford to be indifferent. "This is a moment that requires attention, condemnation, and action," the article continues.
