Oman Participates In UN Foreign Experts Meeting On Geographical Names In New York

New York— Represented by the National Survey and Geospatial Information Authority, the Sultanate of Oman is taking part in the 2025 session of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) at the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA.

During this session, the importance of geographical names was highlighted as vital components of cultural heritage and identity, in addition to the need for standardized spelling on both national and international levels. Topics of discussion included techniques for gathering geographical names, the responsibilities of relevant authorities in preserving and consolidating these names, as well as the influence of modern technologies and artificial intelligence on the management of geographical naming systems.

Oman shared its national report detailing accomplishments and initiatives related to geographical naming from 2023 to 2025, complemented by a working paper and a visual presentation explaining the impact of the Unified Arab System on the transliteration of geographical names from Arabic into Latin. In conjunction with the session, Oman also took part in the side meeting of the Arab Division of the UNGEGN.
