Muscat: Oman Airports has reported a significant increase in air traffic during the Khareef Dhofar (monsoon) season of 2025, spanning from early June to the end of August. This surge is attributed to the growing appeal of travel to Dhofar, celebrated for its enjoyable climate and a variety of recreational and cultural activities.
According to Oman Airports, Salalah Airport experienced a 13.2% rise in passenger traffic from early June to the end of August this year, accommodating 562,561 passengers compared to 496,936 passengers during the same timeframe in 2024. Additionally, aircraft movements increased by 10%, totaling 3,409 flights in contrast to 3,105 flights last year. This underscores the effectiveness of initiatives aimed at enhancing the airport's role as the primary gateway to Dhofar.
In a related development, Sohar Airport recorded an impressive 80% increase in passenger traffic between July and August 2025, with the number of travelers rising from 6,495 in July to 11,691 in August.
For the first time, Salalah Airport introduced a drive-through check-in service from July 15 to September 15, enabling passengers to complete their travel procedures directly from their vehicles. Transom also provided its "Marhaba" service in Salalah, allowing travelers to finalize their travel plans, including check-in and baggage drop-off, ahead of time. A home check-in service was additionally made available.
Moreover, self-service check-in kiosks were launched during the Khareef season, providing travelers with quick and flexible options.
Oman Airports also organized a FIFA electronic sports championship at the cargo building, drawing in young individuals and e-sports fans in a competitive setting.
