French Open: Iga Swiatek Kickstarts Title Defence With Win

Paris: Poland's Iga Swiatek began her French Open championship defense with a victory against Rebecca Sramkova on Monday.

According to the official WTA website, Iga recovered from being 31 down in the first set to win 63, 63.

In the next round, she will compete against Emma Raducanu, who defeated Wang Xinyu 75, 46, 63 in a 2-hour, 44-minute match.

Swiatek beat Raducanu 6-0, 6-1 in just 1 hour and 10 minutes in the third round of the Australian Open in January. She has yet to lose a set to Raducanu in four encounters.

Elena Rybakina also earned a hard-fought victory over Argentina's qualifier Julia Riera, 61, 46, 64.

Rybakina needed one hour and forty-five minutes to overcome Julia and advance to the second round in Paris for the sixth year in a row. Her greatest results at the French Open are quarterfinal appearances in 2021 and the previous year.

Following her sixth consecutive victory, the Kazakh player will try to maintain her streak alive in the second round against 17-year-old American wild card Iva Jovic.
